Deciphered

Her tests were long
and her riddles were cruel.
He smiled and he bore it
like a carefree fool.
But alone, he wept,
heart's river set free,
bursting out of its bounds --
mind tossed at sea.
She marked his work "F"
when it deserved a "B."
She bestowed an "A"
when it called for a "C."
She made no sense,
and he gave no sign
of love's fire burning
past reason or rhyme . . .
while she gamely walked
a very fine line,
love twisting 'round
her heart like a vine.
Into his eyes
she refused to look;
a declaration of love
his fear would not brook.
'Round and 'round each spun
the other, insane
with love incognito,
consuming flame.
Then, one fine day,
the spinning stopped:
Into his arms,
mad schoolmistress dropped.
He embraced her and asked,
"What 'grade' will this be?"
She replied, looking stern,
"An 'F' or a 'D.'"
With that, he knew
love had won the day --
and never again
did she give him an "A."

Less

Fear . . .
no smell,
no taste,
no sound . . .
just something
shrinking.

Prisoner's Plea

Truth is a prisoner
in iron chains
loosened little by little
through backbreaking pains.
Pride, reluctance,
shame, and fear
conspire to shackle
with threats austere
Truth's plea for release,
for honesty sweet --
lost sheep safely nestled
at Jesus' feet.

A Moment of Weakness

Yesterday's terror
still under the skin,
raw nerves, too alert,
now burning within.
What will push the fright
still lodged inside me out for good?
Others' understanding?
Perhaps, perhaps, it could . . . . .

The Face

There is a hardness
that can replace
warm blood and humanity,
stiffening a face into stone,
chiseled planes of bone
so cold,
water could freeze on them.
Eyes, fixed,
slick pools of bottomless ice
stilled by something
worse than hate --
no fire blazing there.
Cheeks taut,
skin pulled tight,
flexing only to grimace
crookedly,
symmetry dissolving
into misshapen madness.
And the face
grotesque
cares not.

In the Grip

Awakened! --
to the night holding its breath,
past having entered
while I slept,
air electric
with watching and being watched,
molecules observing molecules observing something (me?) --
something past
and
something present
jelling . . .
stalkers of empty space
formless, pulsing,
humming mutely.
Hearing their eyes
(through a sense I cannot explain),
I dare not move
for fear of being
seen.
